Over 900 cyclists join Hackney’s seventh annual ‘Bike around the Borough’
VolkerHighways was once again proud to be a Gold Sponsor of Hackney Council’s seventh annual ‘Bike around the Borough’ event, held on Thursday 29 June.
A total of 37 schools and 979 cyclists took to the streets of Hackney as part of a mass cycle ride around the borough. The route covered nine miles in a round trip, starting and finishing at Hackney Downs Park, with a stop in Clissold Park to pick up more cyclists.
Several members of the VolkerHighways and VolkerWessels UK teams joined the ride, along with eight cyclists from the joint venture, CVU.
Cllr Demirci, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods and Sustainability, said: “I was delighted to see so many of Hackney’s young people cycling together en masse, getting to know Hackney’s roads and hopefully seeing how easy it is to get around the borough by bike. As well as being a great day out and showing how fun cycling can be to all residents, Bike Around the Borough will help children get on their bikes more, helping to make the borough greener and encourage a healthy lifestyle.”
The event helps to promote cycling as an alternative means of transport and Hackney aims to be the most cycle-friendly borough in London, with 15 per cent of residents travelling by bike for all journeys by 2025.
Alistair Thompson, managing director of VolkerHighways, said: “We are delighted to continue our support for this fantastic event once again. As part of our collaboration with Hackney Council, we have constructed cycling infrastructure to help increase the safety of cyclists throughout the borough; it’s great to see events like Bike around the Borough promoting this mode of transport.”
Bike around the Borough was organised by Hackney Council in partnership with the Metropolitan Police and supported by VolkerHighways and Berkeley Homes.
