VolkerRail launches community engagement channel for South Yorkshire Supertram replacement works

To help residents and passengers stay up-to-date with rail replacement works across the South Yorkshire Supertram network, VolkerRail has launched a community engagement channel through a platform called Site Podium.

The community engagement channel is part of VolkerRail's wider communication strategy to ensure effective engagement with local communities and has already had great success on The Hope Valley Railway Upgrade project, with over 1,000  residents engaged in the project's bespoke community app.

VolkerRail will use the channel to post regular updates throughout the project, allowing for a better understanding of the work, along with progress images, working schedules, traffic management plans, and interviews with the team. The app also contains contact and feedback sections for questions, allowing enquires to be sent directly to the project team, which can be answered in real time.

The South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) appointed VolkerRail to renew areas of track on one of the region’s best loved modes of transport.

In March, South Yorkshire Supertram came back under public control after 27 years. SYMCA is now investing around £5m this year to future proof and extend the lifespan of our tram network.

The work, a small element of a wider investment in the system, forms part of SYMCA’s ongoing maintenance programme to extend the lifespan of the network and is critical to providing passengers with a better travel experience; improving comfort and reducing noise in areas where tracks are currently worn.

How to access the channel

To follow our channel, simply download Site Podium to your Android or Apple device. Once downloaded, click the search icon and type ‘South Yorkshire Supertram’. The project will then show, allowing you to see updates, and follow.

Sam Allen, VolkerRail general manager, said: “We understand the impact this type of work can have on those using South Yorkshire Supertram as their preferred mode of transport, and how important it is to be able to stay up to date with the latest project information.

“This app helps us meet this need whilst also building a strong relationship with local residents. On downloading the app, users can choose to be notified of upcoming construction dates, project milestones, or even job vacancies, as well as the community and environmental initiatives we aim to deliver whilst undertaking the works.

“We will be using the lessons learnt by the Hope Valley Upgrade Project team, and aim to get some really great engagement posted in the coming weeks.”
