For over 30 years, VolkerRail has worked at British Steel’s integrated steelmaking site in Scunthorpe. This extensive network consisting of over 100 miles of track, over 300 turnouts, and three separate sidings, used for loading/unloading trains, is maintained solely by VolkerRail. Its team's complete regular inspections and scheduled maintenance projects to ensure British Steel can safely transport materials around site, and out to its customers, 365 days of the year, 24 hours a day.

In January, the team marked its eleventh consecutive year without a lost time accident. This significant achievement is a testament to how the team prioritises site safety, to create an efficient and healthy work environment.

Having achieved this impressive milestone last month, the team was further recognised for its outstanding safety efforts at VolkerWessels UK’s 2022 internal Platinum Awards, held on Thursday 9 February, where it won the Health and Safety Champion Award.

Adrees Khan, construction manager, said: “I am immensely proud of my team’s achievements. To reach 11 years without a loss time incident, especially at a site that is operational 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year, is amazing.

“To also be acknowledged for our safe performance at group level, by winning a Platinum Award – especially after meeting other finalists and hearing the great work they are doing - just shows you how great our team is.

“I would like to thank everyone for the efforts made in providing British Steel with an operational site. Whether we undertake a minor repair or large scale scheduled maintenance, we always prioritise safety, and hope to see this achievement marked again in 2024, as we reach 12 years without a lost time incident.”

Niall McCreanor, specialist businesses director, said: “Employee safety is always our top priority, and this milestone is a significant achievement. The efforts of the team to provide our client with a first-class service, whilst putting safety first, is an accomplishment they should all be proud of, and one worth recognition. Well done all.”
