Once a close call is raised, it is then reviewed and if necessary, actions are put in place to 'close out' the close call - removing the potential accident or incident.

VolkerWessels UK has pledged to donate £1 to charity for every close call raised. 50% of all money raised annually is donated to the group's nominated charity, Save the Children.

The remaining 50% is donated to charities chosen by the businesses in the group, in proportion to the number of close calls raised. Furthermore, for every close call which is closed out, VolkerRail donates an additional £1.

Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice is based in North Anston near Sheffield and provides support for children with life-limiting conditions and their families.

VolkerRail has been supporting the hospice for over a decade, to ensure it can support families based across South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, North Nottinghamshire and parts of North Lincolnshire. Their work is hugely important considering there are less than 55 dedicated children’s hospices in the UK, compared to more than 200 adult hospices.

Last year, VolkerRail donated £14,836 to the hospice through its close call campaign. This year's donation - £9,297 from VolkerRail, and £8,441 from VolkerWessels UK.

Stuart Webster-Spriggs, VolkerRail’s HSQES director, said: “The close calls scheme is very important to us because it means everyone is engaged in close call spotting, making the workplace as safe as possible.”

“I want to say a huge thank you from myself and the senior management team at VolkerRail, to those of you who continue to raise close calls. You are not only benefiting your colleagues and the stake holders of VolkerRail, but the families who use Bluebell Wood as it is an absolute lifeline for them.”

Sam Wood, director of income generation at Bluebell Wood, said: “I would like to take this opportunity to thank every employee at VolkerRail for the wonderful fundraising they have undertaken.

“The money donated goes towards providing support for families in the local community, allowing them to make use of the facilities and care provided.

“We recognise that over £100,000 has been donated through the partnership, and we want to thank VolkerRail and VolkerWessels UK for their continued support.”
