High praise at the CECA awards
Jack Raftery, site engineer, was recently named Most Promising Trainee Civil Engineer at the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA) Southern Awards.
The CECA awards celebrate the achievements made by young professionals across the UK, while also helping to encourage a greater diversity into the industry.
Jack was recognised for his accomplishments within the business, as well as his volunteering efforts through our partnership with Raleigh International which saw Jack spend time in Costa Rica building a multi-function building; now used as a primary school and hospital for locum doctors.
The Judges commented that what stood out on Jack’s submission was his ‘ability and enthusiasm to go above and beyond an already demanding role, with his mentoring duties, becoming a CITB ambassador and promoting the industry to schools, prisons and young people, whilst also continuing with his personal development such as the ICE graduate personal development portfolio and preparing for his engineering technician exam.’
Commenting on his award, Jack said: “It is an honour to add to the list of CECA award winners produced by VolkerFitzpatrick over the last few years. Without the opportunities that VolkerFitzpatrick provide, I certainly would not have been in contention for winning this award and I look forward to a long career in a fantastic fast growing industry.”
Working within VolkerFitzpatrick’s rail division, Jack joined the business through our Industrial Training Placement (ITP) programme. Currently based within our Meridian Water Station project, Jack has been instrumental in the management of dimensional control across the site, ensuring quality standards with multiple stakeholders, in addition to mentoring and providing guidance to our recent ITP graduates and trainee engineers.
John Cox, managing director of VolkerFitzpatrick’s rail division, said: “We are extremely proud of Jack. He’s a dedicated individual, who provides invaluable support within our projects and whose passion and dedication has cemented his standing within our division. This award not only recognises Jack’s incredible accomplishments in engineering, but also helps to highlight the promising engineers we have across our business. Well done.”
