VolkerHighways sponsors eighth fun-filled celebration of cycling

This summer, VolkerHighways was once again a proud Gold sponsor of Hackney Council’s annual ‘Bike around the Borough’ event. Over a thousand children and adults turned out to enjoy the sunshine and cycle through the borough.

An impressive 1,073 keen cyclists, from 42 schools completed the nine-mile route, starting and finishing at Hackney Downs Park. The participants formed a ‘bike bus’, riding together along a set route and picking up people as they went. Five VolkerHighways cyclists took part in the ride, whilst others helped to set up the area where the route finished.

Even ‘Kerby’ the VolkerHighways traffic cone mascot made an appearance, cheering cyclists on, as they completed the ride.

‘Bike around the Borough’ is an opportunity to showcase the benefits of cycling through the borough as well as to encourage children to use their bikes safely. The day was co-ordinated by Hackney Borough Council and the Met Police.

Philip Glanville, Mayor of Hackney, said: “I was again thrilled to be able to join children and volunteers on Bike around the Borough. It was inspiring to see their joy, hear their songs and chants as they cycled around Hackney, reclaiming our streets together. They represented their borough with distinction! More than anything, Bike around the Borough shows how committed we are as a borough to cycling and I’m already counting down the days until next year!”

Alistair Thompson, managing director of VolkerHighways, said: “VolkerHighways always enjoys being an active participant and sponsor of Bike around the Borough. It is a fantastic initiative and a great way to get the whole community thinking about sustainable travel.”
