Steel piling application and advantages

Steel piling is adopted across all sectors and installed as temporary or permanent works within both marine and land based environments to suit most ground conditions.

VolkerGround Engineering have over the last 50 years provided a range of geotechnical solutions using steel piles.  We can design and install a variety of steel pile structures depending upon the individual project requirements and ground conditions.

  • Ports and harbours – combi and high modulus walls , in the form of interlinked tubular piles, HZM Sections and sheets, widely used for marine quay, harbour walls and jetty’s
  • Coastal protection – steel sheet piles in standard and jagged form, sometimes within a combi wall solution for revetment toe restraints
  • Flood alleviation schemes - providing existing embankment stabilisation, raising the level of flood prevention barriers and formation of new flood barriers and river walls
  • Commercial & Residential – permanent retaining walls,  the construction of underground car parks with sheet piles forming the basement structure
  • Highways – use of steel sheet piles to act as retaining walls, steel sections to act as foundations for structures
  • Permanent works -  steel piles can provide an economical solution to form a permanent structure that is capable of supporting both vertical loads from structures and lateral loads from earth pressures, structures or water
  • Temporary works – to form accesses into restricted sites, to form thrust and reception pits for direction/horizontal drilling operations, to form a temporary retaining wall or cofferdam to allow services to be installed, service support works etc.

What is the advantage of steel piling?

  • factory preformed sections that are both reusable and recyclable
  • pile lengths are easily adaptable to suit variable ground conditions
  • can be used in both temporary and permanent conditions
  • the versatility of the interlock system allows for installation to desired layouts
  • design life can be enhanced through sacrificial corrosion or protective coatings
  • sheet pile walls can be designed for both horizontal and vertical loads with the ability to be easily anchored or propped

Unlike traditional concrete retaining piling techniques there is:

  • no curing time required allowing excavation to commence nearly immediately
  • little ground disturbance during the installation process
  • can be installed close to site boundaries
  • no spoil arisings to deal with after installation is complete, which is particularly important on ‘brownfield’ or contaminated sites
  • can offer programme savings

Steel piling also allows construction activity to commence with very little delays, with pile lengths anot limited in poor ground conditions due to the ability extend sections.
