VolkerRail is an established and experienced railway infrastructure contractor. We have a successful track record of delivering projects across the whole of the UK; working with Network Rail, London Underground as well as light rail and tram operating companies to enhance the national infrastructure.
An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Head of Design & Engineering Manager join VolkerRail’s Major Projects Department working on the SID project based in London with travel to Tonbridge.
In this role you will be responsible for:
- Undertake engineering risk reviews of tenders and projects in your portfolio mitigating the risks where possible. Identify high and unmitigated risks to the Regional Director and agree on a mitigation plan.
- Provide input as required to the bid and work winning teams for works in your portfolio to ensure VolkerRail present the client with competitive and compliant tenders. Ensure the scope is understood and there are no gaps within the technical or pricing element of the submission and participate in ‘value engineering’ discussions as required.
- Manage holistically the output on your portfolio of projects from Design, Installation, Test & Engineering teams to ensure programme milestones are achieved, holding regular meetings with Design, Installation, Testing Managers & Project Engineers in order to monitor success.
- Ensure your teams work within the allocated budgets & ensure sufficient monitoring tools are in place to control progress & expenditure.
- Work closely with the Production Lead to ensure that the required resource, including agency & sub-contractors, equipment, plant, material, documentation is forecasted to deliver tenders and projects.
- Ensure your team, including sub-contractors and agency staff working on your portfolio of works, comply with all mandatory Statutory, Industry, Client and VolkerRail standards, procedures, contract requirements to meet the contract programmes for the works.
- Undertake audits and management checks in line with the IMS requirements and ensure quality end-product checks/surveillance of staff working practices are carried out, providing reports to appropriate Senior Management and ensure that ‘snagging’ is reduced to ALARP.
- Identify the key client contacts and build strong relationships to ensure VolkerRail are the contractor of choice procuring future work in your portfolio. Plan strategic engineering goals with the client and escalate/ manage any difficult issues.
- Liaise with the internal projects & client teams to ensure the project requirements are understood, complied with & as required, variations identified & submitted.
- Establish a strong working relationship with the work winning, project management, planning and commercial leads for VolkerRail working on the schemes in your portfolio to ensure collective tender and project success.
- Undertake engineering readiness reviews of your portfolio of schemes at different intervals leading into signalling commissioning’s and report on findings to the Regional Director.
- Ensure that you have an in-depth knowledge of Engineering Management of Projects, GRIP process and technical stage-gate reviews to enable you to undertake the role of Contractors Engineering Manager (CEM) and/or Contractors Responsible Engineer (CRE) as required.
About you
- HNC/HND in Engineering I Eng Engineering Degree C Eng
- Proven experience in Engineering Leadership positions and oversight of Engineering & Construction works in Railway Industry including an appropriate period of time acting in a Project Engineering or Managerial capacity. Proven experience in estimating including take off from design drawings, interpretation of Employers requirements, the preparation of technical enquiries, quotation review and analysis, first principle costing, resourcing, planning and technical writing. Proven experience in Railway Track Renewals Portfolio in Engineering Leadership position. Proven experience in design management. Robust understanding of Network Rail line standards and Engineering Assurance process.
