Sturry Link Road

VolkerFitzpatrick has been appointed to design and build a much-needed highway crossing over a rail line and river in Kent on behalf of Kent County Council (KCC).

The £34m Sturry Link Road project, funded via the Local Growth Fund, will divert traffic away from the existing level crossing, one of Kent’s most heavily congested areas. As well as reducing congestion, the link road will support new housing of over 16,000 homes in the area.

  • Construct a 550-metre-long road
  • 250-metre viaduct to be built over the Great Stour River, the river’s flood plain, and the railway line from Canterbury to Ramsgate
  • Viaduct will be supported by a 5-span structure, with the longest span distance being 56 metres apart
  • Dedicated bus lane and multi-user footway, new roundabout and approach roads to connect to the bridge
  • Installation of pedestrian crossing points, new street lighting, environmental mitigation works, drainage and ponds
  • As well as reducing congestion, the link road will support new housing of over 16,000 homes in the area
  • Provide local employment and apprenticeship opportunities, and  use supply chain contractors from the surrounding area
  • Engage with local educational establishments, including The King's School
  • Working with VolkerGround Engineering and VolkerHighways

I am pleased we are now in a position that we are able to move forward with our work towards the Sturry Link Road. The new route will allow traffic to avoid the level crossing and support planned development, while helping to keep this part of Kent moving safely.
